Announcing the Green Party of PA 2022 Candidates

Greetings to all Pennsylvania Commonwealth voters as we welcome spring, a season marked with growth and renewal, along with some beautiful weather! On March 16, the Green Party of PA (GPPA, www.gpofpa.org) began circulating nominating papers for our candidates, which has inspired a renewed sense of excitement within me for Green politics. I hope that as you learn more about our state-level candidates this year, you will feel equally as inspired.
Just before our nominating convention on March 13, I spoke with Christina “PK” DiGiulio, who will be running for PA governor. I have been acquainted with Christina for a few years through the water protector movement in Chester County, where we both live. Speaking with her at length was both fascinating and delightful! After earning her bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Lock Haven University, Christina worked for a number of years for the Department of Defense. Then, tragically, she needed to step away from her job after contracting Lyme disease.
While recovering, Christina began researching native artifacts, which led her to learning about the water protectors in North Dakota, who were protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. From there, Christina was inspired to join local water protectors here in PA. She first worked with Lancaster Against Pipelines, then learned that we have the Mariner East Pipeline threatening our water and safety right here in Chester County. Christina was horrified that she had moved here not knowing that such a tremendous threat to our safety was in the process of being built. She realized that many people unknowingly live near such existential threats because corporations want to build them and the government does nothing to inform or protect the people.
When she is elected governor of Pennsylvania, Christina DiGiulio would work to inform residents and protect the environment. As she pointed out in our conversation, residents cannot give consent to a pipeline being constructed in their backyard or near their child’s school without being fully informed of what the pipeline is, why it is there, and what could happen if something goes wrong. On a grander scale, Christina noted that we, as human beings, are part of nature, and we have evolved to live in harmony with it. If we don’t protect our environment, we won’t be healthy ourselves. I am so grateful that Christina has chosen to run with the Green Party, and I can’t wait to vote for her in November!
Joining Christina “PK” DiGuilio on the ballot will be Michael Bagdes-Canning, running for Lieutenant Governor of PA, and Richard Weiss, running for U.S. Senate. Michael Bagdes-Canning has run before as a Green for the PA General Assembly. He is currently the mayor of Cherry Valley Borough, PA. Michael has served as an organizer of Marcellus Outreach Butler, an anti-fracking organization in western PA, and has co-founded the Better Path Coalition, a statewide coalition of grassroots environmental groups. In his campaign with Christina DiGiulio, Michael plans to focus on anti-corruption legislation, improving healthcare access and affordability, environmental justice and repair, infrastructure upgrades, protecting womens’ rights, and ensuring voting rights.
Richard L. Weiss is a lawyer who has previously run as a Green for PA Attorney General. He supports criminal justice reforms including ending cash bail, decriminalizing drug use and sex work, and establishing citizens' police review boards with strong police professionalism standards. Richard says that when he is elected to the U.S. Senate, his first act will be to move for a vote on Medicare For All.
The Green Party has an excellent slate of candidates running for office this year, but we need your help to get them on the ballot. Whether you’re a seasoned petitioner or have never carried a clipboard before, we would be so grateful for you to join us this year in helping our candidates achieve ballot access and get into office, where they can start making the changes we so desperately need!
