Green Party of Pennsylvania Announces First Ever Primary Winner

Friends and neighbors,

It brings us great joy to announce for you the historic results of the first ever Green Party of Pennsylvania Primary. Jill Stein and Jasmine Sherman are the winners of the state's primary. Stein will earn 10 delegates and Sherman will earn 3 delegates. Jorge Zavala and write-in candidates will not earn any delegates.

The Green Party of Pennsylvania on January 7th, 2024 decided to proportion their delegates by using the largest remainder method and a droop quota. The largest remainder method is also known as Hamilton method, Hare-Niemeyer method, or as Vinton's method. It is a way of allocating seats proportionally for representative assemblies.

The largest remainder method requires the number of votes for each party be divided by a quota representing the number of votes required for a seat to determine the amount of delegates a candidate earns. The candidate who received the highest remainder of votes will earn a remaining delegate.

There were 129 votes counted. Jill Stein earned 97 votes. Jasmine Sherman earned 25 votes. Jorge Zavala earned 5 votes. A write-in candidate, Cornel West who dropped out of the race for the Green Party nomination earned 1 vote. There was 1 undeclared vote. 1 vote was rejected for being unmarked. The final delegate was given to Jasmine Sherman on a tiebreaker instead of Jorge Zavala who did not meet the droop quota.

We hope you will join us for our state committee meeting on March 10th https://www.gpofpa.org/gppa_state_20240310
